이 노래는 16 ~ 17세기에, 《엘핀 나이트》 (차일드 발라드 No. 2)라고 하는 오래된 발라드를 개작한 것이라고 전해진다. 음유시인이 마을에서 마을로 노래를 전하고 다니는 사이에 그것은 점차 변해가고, 몇십개의 시(詩)도 만들어졌다. 하지만 전형적으로 부른 것은 적었다. 사이먼&가펑클에 의해 유명해진 편곡은 20세기 말에 만들어진 것이다.
